Markus Hollop, Bass
 


Young Berlin born basse Markus Holllop studied at the Musikhochschule Munich with Prof. Josef Loibl. He was member of the Opera Studio and of the ensemble of the Bayerische Staatsoper, later he became member of the ensemble of the Staatstheater Kassel.


He sang ‘Sarastro’ (“Die Zauberflöte”) in Görlitz, Erfurt und Kassel, ‘Don Basilio’ (“Il Barbiere di Siviglia”) in Görlitz and Leipzig, ‘Crespel’ (“Les Contes d’Hoffmann”) in Wiesbaden, ‘2. Handwerksbursche’ (“Wozzeck”) conducted by Armin Jordan in Geneva, “Moses und Aron” in Paris and London conducted by Christoph von Dohnanyi, ‘Le Spectre’ (“Hamlet”) in Geneva, “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg” in Strasbourg conducted by Theodor Guschlbauer, ‘Joe’ (“Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny”) in Lausanne conducted by Steven Sloane, “Salome” in Paris, (Das Rheingold”) in Kassel, (“Dr. Faust”) conducted by Kent Nagano with CD recording by Erato in Lyon, ‘La Cuisinière’ (“Love of the three oranges”) in Lyon.

 




In September 1998 he sang his highly acclaimed first ‘Ochs’ (“Der Rosenkavalier”) in Geneva in the production of Moshe Leiser and Patrice Courier and conducted by Philippe Auguin, followed by (“Semiramide”) in Geneva conducted by Gianluigi Gelmetti. 1999 he was heard as ‘Commendatore’ (“Don Giovanni”) with Armin Jordan in Geneva, as ‘Sarastro’ and ‘Fasolt’ in Kassel followed by his debut at the Glyndebourne Festival in the part of ’Publio’ (“La Clemenza di Tito”). In fall 1999 he sang ‘Bartolo’ (“Le Nozze di Fiagro”) at the Opéra Bastille in Paris.

In 2000 he sang his first ‘Arkel’ (“Pelléas et Mélisande”) in Geneva conducted by Louis Langrée, new productions of “Hamlet” and “Louise” in Toulouse (Nicolas Joel/Michel Plasson) and at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris. In fall 2000 he sang his first ‘Fafner’ (“Das Rheingold) with the Scottish Opera at the Edinburgh Festival and in Glasgow, in Strasbourg his first ‘Daland’ (“Der fliegende Holländer”) in 2001 followed by a very successful ‘Ochs’ at the Opera Pacific, USA.


 
   



In fall 2001 he sang “Wozzeck” in Paris (James Conlon), ‘Gralsritter’ (“Parsifal”) with Claudio Abbado) in Berlin, in 2002 he sang ‘Titurel’ (“Parsifal”) with Abbado/Stein at Salzburg Easter Festival followed by “Siegfried” at the Edinburgh Festival and in Glasgow.
Among his future projects are “Hamlet” at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden and at the Gran Teatro del Liceu as well as “Ring” cycles at the Edinburgh Festival and in Manchester conducted by Richard Armstrong.


As a concert singer he has a large repertoire. He sang “Messiah” conducted by Jesus Lopez Cobos in Lausanne, “Romeo et Juliette” by Berlioz in both Torino (Conducted by Eliahu Inbal) and Montpellier, “Stabat Mater” by Dvorak in Bochum with Steven Sloane and a New Year’s concert at the Zurich Tonhalle conducted by David Zinman. He will return to Zurich for Schubert concerts in March 2003.
